「put up」は、一時的なものや比較的小さなものを設置することに使われる。特に、素早く組み立てられるものや、固定されていないものに適している。
「build」は、しっかりとした構造物を作るときに使われ、長期間使うもの（家、ビル、橋、会社、システムなど）に適している。物理的なものだけでなく、「関係」「信頼」「キャリア」など抽象的なものを築く意味でも使われる。
